 Inspiration
"Candy Boxes" is inspired by Wanyan's childhood memories of sweets— the joy they brought and the pain of tooth decay. 

As a child, Wanyan was enchanted by candy — so much so that she developed painful cavities that made eating difficult. But despite the aching teeth, candy remained a sweet obsession she could never let go of.

To her, candy was more than sweetness — it held the warmth of childhood: rewards from elders and memories of sharing with friends. As she grew up, worries about her vision and the dread of toothaches kept her away from it. But even now, a glimpse of those vivid colors brings back a flood of happiness.

“In Wanyan’s memory, there was a candy jar at her grandmother’s house, tucked inside a tall floor-standing cabinet. As a little girl, she was just small enough to crawl completely inside it. The jar was a large brass container, decorated with colorful enamel paintings, and its lid had to be pried open with a pair of scissors, using leverage — like unlocking a hidden treasure. ”

Using candy elements like gummy bears, the piece evokes nostalgia. Based on the concept of Pic 'N' Mix, it invites audience interaction, allowing them to choose different boxes, candies and materials. Each candy gem, meticulously crafted by her, is set in a silver box to store memories like treasures.

Wanyan aims to bring immediate joy to people with this collection of candy-inspired jewelry, so in the process of creating the pieces, she removed the elements of pain.

 Test Process 1
At the beginning of the project, Wanyan used the technique of painting enamel on flat copper sheets to depict shapes of candies and teeth. She connected the candies using chains and neuron elements, illustrating how human memory resembles a web, with fragments of memories surfacing like scattered pieces.

Test Process 2
 In the second phase, she transitioned from two-dimensional surfaces to three-dimensional forms, utilizing digital modeling, 3D printing, and dyeing techniques. Resin candies emerged with vivid tactility—some embedded like treasures within translucent boxes, others strung as beads to become playful, wearable pieces of jewelry.

Test Process 3
However, due to the harmful nature of UV-cured resin and its unsatisfactory gloss and finish, Wanyan made a decisive return to enamel. Applied more thickly onto silver bases, the enamel revealed a richer texture and depth, aligning better with her vision for quality and emotional resonance.

Test Process  4 & Future Plans

She will replace the resin beads with hollow candy-shaped elements, delicately hand-blown using the lampworking technique—a shift that brought new lightness, fragility, and authenticity to the jewelry pieces.

Wanyan Wu is a jewellery designer from China who graduated from Birmingham School Of Jewellery and majored in Jewellery And Related Products in 2023. Most of her works are narrative jewellery. The techniques she uses mainly include 3D modeling, enamelling, and lampglass working. She want to find a breakthrough and innovation that combines traditional craftsmanship with new industry craftsmanship.
